OUR ENGAGEMENT STORY
April 28, 2006
It was a typical day in paradise. The sun was setting (actual photo on the left), the weather - perfect. It had been a productive day, I was distracted with research and work.
Cliff offered to go shopping and make dinner. Happily, I agreed. He came back with arms full of groceries and began to make food. I took a break from work and sat on the lanai (back porch). Looking into the kitchen window, I could see Cliff working away and felt great gratitude for the simple joy I now live in. "Thank you, God!"
We left for a picnic dinner on the beach, complete with a basket, blanket, champagne and our journals. I love the safe environment we have created to share...
The sun was setting and we ate. He asked if I wanted champagne now or later? I said "later." (I was really hungry and didn't want to get sick). We ate and he excused himself saying he forgot something in the car, something about his journal...
Alright, I thought nature called, and he didn't want to be rude. He casually excuse himself. While he was gone, I passing thought occurred - "he's going to pop the question."
I thought I was crazy, dismissing the insightful voice...especially when I looked up and realized from a distance that his board shorts had no pockets! Where in the world would he put the ring? I found my head telling Spirit to "get off it," to stop the chatter and focus on being in the bliss of the present moment.
When he sat down, he asked if I had seen his journal? I looked in the bag we brought and said, "Here it is!" He opened it up to a poem he said he wrote for me.
The last lines of the poem were "Will you? Will You? Do you have a clue?"
"Wha?" I thought? "Could you re...."
When I looked up from the pages of his journal, I realized that he was on his knees. I looked at his face - full of passion. Then, he popped out a beautiful ring box, bearing the most beautiful ring I have ever seen.
"I love you, Ev. Will you marry me?"
I was taken by the moment and was completely and utterly surprised and speechless. Spirit, mind and soul encouraged, "Say Yes! Say Yes!" I was silent - glancing between his face and the ring. My mouth must have been open, but I couldn't get a word out. I was sitting down, but, I know what being swept off my feet meant.
"Yes!" I uttered, "Yes! Yes! Yes!" We embraced....
